Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver, Camille Kingsolver, and Steven L. Hopp is the book (“read” many times via audiobook due to having a long commute at the time) that started Dani’s obsession with the idea of being a locavore and ultimately building a micro-farm.
Dani’s review: Chock full of season-appropriate recipes and sobering facts about the carbon footprint of non-local/out-of-season food, with a small dose of gallows humor about processing poultry, this book changed everything about my concept (having grown up in the era of the Campbell’s Soup casserole and never tasting fresh vegetables until sometime in adulthood) of how to feed myself and the real cost of “cheap” comestibles.
Dani’s review: An ardent Steinbeck fan since childhood, I first read this gem sometime in my mid teens and it became my all-time favorite of his works. When we began planning our own journey in search of America, I knew I had to re-read it and share it with Lance. It is profoundly personal, wonderfully witty, and eerily prophetic as told by a middle aged Steinbeck who took this journey with his French poodle, Charley (after which our van was named in homage), in the late 1950s.
